Kodak's Inkjet Page Yield Test Background

Introduction

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed ISO Page Yield standards for Inkjet Printer Cartridges so that consumers can make informed purchasing decisions when choosing an Inkjet Printer. All this information can still be confusing however so we have created this page to help explain Kodak's approach to ISO testing and the page yield numbers that we state on our website and packaging.

Kodak's Inkjet Yield and Cost per Page (CPP) testing is conducted by QualityLogic (QLI), an independent third party test institute. Not only do they test KODAK Printers, but they test a broad range of the most popular models from other manufacturers, so that consumers can make accurate comparisons to other brands. These test reports are freely available on the QLI and Kodak web sites.

Page Yield

Page Yield is the total number of pages that can be printed from a given ink cartridge in accordance with ISO/IEC standard testing guidelines. Testing is performed by printing a test target continuously on a printer until the cartridge reaches end of life (as determined by "fade" or an "ink out" message).

ISO/IEC Page Yield Standards

ISO has created a standard (ISO/IEC 24711) for printer manufacturers in order for consumers to more accurately compare brands and technologies. ISO/IEC 24712 is a test page suite used for testing cartridge page yields when printing documents with mixed color graphics and text. ISO/IEC19752 is a test page suite used for testing cartridge page yields when predominantly printing black text documents.

QualityLogic (QLI) tests and reports page yields for Kodak under ISO/IEC 24711 using both the 24712 Test Target and the ISO/IEC 19752 Test Target. Both fall under the umbrella ISO/IEC 24711 testing standard. These reports are available online. Color Page Yield

Color page yield values for color graphics and text documents utilizing KODAK All-In-One Printers, are obtained by continuous printing in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Testing is performed using the ISO/IEC 24712 test target; a set of five 8.5 x 11 pages with a mix of text and graphics. The target is printed continuously until the cartridge reaches end-of-life as defined above.

Black Page Yield

Black page yield values for black text documents are obtained using continuous printing methods in accordance with the ISO/IEC19752 standard test page (monochrome page only). The ISO/IEC 19752 test page is part of the ISO/IEC 24711 testing standard (Annex E). The monochrome test page is a better representation of the consumer experience when printing black text documents (i.e. from MICROSOFT WORD for example) as compared to the ISO/IEC 24712 five-page mixed text and color graphics document. The ISO/IEC 19752 standard is currently used by the laser printer industry for reporting black page yields. This allows consumers to compare black page yields between inkjet and laser printers for the first time. Kodak also publishes black page yield using the ISO/IEC 24712 test target.

Photo Print Yield

The ISO/IEC 29102/29103 Photo Ink Yield Testing Standard is not scheduled for release until approximately 2012; Kodak will test photo yields using the new standard following the ISO standards release. For now, page yield values for 4x6 photos are obtained by continuous printing in accordance with QualityLogic Color Photo Yield Test Methodology. The test suite is comprised of 10 select 4x6 photo images. Click here to view QualityLogic test reports. Actual results may vary.

ISO vs Real World

ISO ink yield testing conditions may not reflect what you experience in everyday use. Actual page yield results may vary and are based on the content of printed pages, frequency of printing, ink used in printer set-up, printhead maintenance, and other factors. ISO standard page yields therefore should be used only as a starting point for comparison purposes, and not to predict the actual yield you will get from your KODAK Printer and Ink Cartridge.

CPP (Cost Per Page)

Kodak calculates Cost Per Page using QualityLogic's approach of taking ink usage from all cartridges into account. Kodak is one of the few if not the only manufacturer to publish CPP using this method. Since various quantities of ink are dispensed by all ink cartridges for ink & printer maintenance during ISO/QLI page yield testing, is important that all associated ink costs are included in the final CPP calculation for each test. QLI's approach takes into account ALL of the ink used when calculating cost per page..

For example, 10 Series Photo CPP calculation:

10C Color Cartridge 10B Black Cartridge
4x6 in. / 10x15 cm photo yield (ESP 7250) 179 photos 1205 photos
Cartridge Cost £14.99 £7.99
Contribution to CPP £.084 £.007
Total CPP for 4x6 in. / 10x15 cm £.091

As you can see, a very small amount of ink from the black cartridge is used to print photos. This cost is figured into the overall CPP for Photos.

1Not all cartridges may be available in all regions. Compatible with Kodak EASYSHARE 5100, 5300, 5500, ESP 3, 5, 7, 9, 3250, 5210, 5250, 7250, 9250, ESP Office 6150, Office Hero 6.1, Hero 7.1 and 9.1 All-In-One Printer models.
